Approval of Minutes - August 9, 2018

Motion to approve.

Public Comment

There was extensive public comment from numerous parents present. Topics included concerns regarding:

1. Parent wishes for meetings to be held at a later time so more parents could attend.
2. Better communication regarding the academic changes around electives at the high school.
3. Better representation from parents on the Board, or at least a better mechanism for the Board to receive parent feedback and concerns.
4. Parents overall noted a high satisfaction with the school and leadership, but wished for improvement in the above areas.

The Board and Administration responded with the following feedback to parents:

1. Will look into varying times or other options for meeting opportunities.
2. Explained the changes to the electives, noting specifically the need for increased time on academics at the high school; parents appeared to understand the changes. All parties agreed that the changes were hopefully temporary, and that more electives would be introduced back in as test scores improved.
3. The Board agreed to discuss ways in which the Board could work more directly with parents in the future, and improve communication.

The Board and Administration discussed the academic results for Gary Middle College.

Academic Review: 21st Century

The Board and Administration discussed the Academic Results for 21st Century.

Graduation Pathways Discussion

Motion to "opt in" of our 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022 students into the Graduation Pathways as described and finalized by the Indiana State Board of Education November 7, 2017.

Due to time constraints, this topic was not discussed, and was tabled via consensus.
